I've been lucky enough to have been asked to photograph some of the most
creative people in my community - Susie Bright, Kathy Acker, June
Jordan and Dorothy Allison among others. I once sent my portfolio to an extremely prestigious New York magazine. I got a great rejection letter back. It was personal and carefully crafted, but a rejection none the less. But the reason I was being turned down was why I like my portrait work. The letter said that I was 'too connected to and involved with my subjects' and that I showed too much 'empathy'.
