It all
started in 1979 when I got a phone call from the women who had
'refaced' a Fiat Billboard. The original ad slogan "If It Were A Lady
It Would
Get It's Bottom Pinched" had been added to with: "If This Lady Were A
Car, She'd Run You Down". The ad agency
professed shock saying the advertising slogan was simply a 'humorous
allusion to the Italian origins of the car'. But women weren't laughing
- until the graffiti was added. The billboard was removed pretty fast. Graffiti hunting became a way of life for me, and across three continents I've documented the enraged and humorous messages of the powerless and disenfranchised, who responded to the corporations who have colonised the landscape and skylines of our cities. For those who can't afford to buy the streets, the walls and billboards become an instant message board!
